Now: forming the founding board

01 · Why this must exist

Every year, remarkable libraries disappear.

A personal library is more than a possession. It is a map of a mind — a record of what one person read, questioned, returned to, and loved across a lifetime.

And yet, when a collector downsizes, or a reader passes on, there is almost nowhere for such a library to go. Public libraries rarely take them. Museums collect objects, not readers’ lives. Dealers part them out volume by volume. So most meaningful personal libraries end up…

Boxed.

Scattered.

Quietly discarded.

When Susan Sontag died, her library — some twenty thousand volumes — found a home at UCLA. For meaningful libraries without a famous name, no such door exists.

There is no institutional path for a personal library to outlive private life. We are founding one.

02 · What we are building

A conservatory for the reading life

The Conservatory will be a place — a warm, beautiful, working institution where entrusted collections are preserved with care and opened to the public. It is being designed around four commitments:

Reading rooms

Collections that can be read, not merely stored.

Exhibitions

Libraries interpreted as portraits of the minds that built them.

Literary programming

Conversation, authorship, and public intellectual life.

Educational access

Schools, scholars, and community, welcomed in.

Not a library · Not a museum · Not a dealer · Not storage

A new kind of institution — a steward that receives meaningful collections and gives them a public life.

03 · Building in the open

We’re building this in the open.

An institution devoted to stewardship should be transparent from its first day. No fake hours, no rendered lobbies — just exactly where things stand, updated as they change.

Institutions are founded by people who arrive early.

Before there are doors to open, there are people to gather. If you see yourself in any of these seats, we would like to know you.

05 · A note from the founder

I started the Conservatory because I kept watching libraries vanish — collections assembled over decades, dispersed in a weekend.

Every serious reader I know has wondered, at some point, what will become of their books. The honest answer today is: nothing good. I believe a civilization that builds museums for paintings and archives for papers can build an institution for personal libraries — a place where they are kept whole, read, exhibited, and understood.

That institution now exists on paper. The next chapters — the board, the building, the first entrusted collections — will be written with the people who find their way to this page. I hope you are one of them.
